1. SpaceX IPO is ample proof that the Chinese wall between equity research and investment banking in IB firms is a myth.
You might expect wildly divergent views on a company as speculative as SpaceX. Here the underwriters disagreed only over the scale of the upside. Sceptical voices came from outside the syndicate. Morningstar, for example, valued the shares at $63.

When the dotcom bubble burst, regulators uncovered emails showing that Wall Street analysts were privately disparaging stocks they were publicly touting. A 2003 global settlement between banks and regulators on analyst research imposed sweeping restrictions. It barred investment bankers from influencing analyst compensation, tightly controlled communications between research and banking, and banned analysts from IPO pitches and roadshows. New York Attorney General Elliot Spitzer’s premise was that shielding analysts from bankers would deliver truly independent — and better — research. On one level, the reforms succeeded. Banks have constructed a robust compliance apparatus to wall off research from investment banking. “Chaperones” now police interactions between analysts and corporate finance to prevent even the appearance of pressure. The Spitzer global settlement formally ended last December in favour of more flexible rules overseen by an industry association.

It is hard to see how SpaceX shares can avoid a cratering.

About 30 per cent of the roughly 640mn SpaceX shares available to trade have been borrowed to sell short, up 10 percentage points over the past 10 days, highlighting how traders are becoming increasingly sceptical of the company’s market prospects... About 900mn further SpaceX shares could become available to trade as soon as next month when certain lock-up provisions for pre-IPO investors expire. Traders who doubt there is sufficient demand for the deluge of extra equity are cashing out now as a result, market participants say.

2. After reducing their hiring last year, firms with jobs exposed to AI are planning to increase their entry-level hiring this year, but they come with a "seniorisation". 

Candidates for starter roles in the most AI-exposed industries are now expected to show a mastery of the skills traditionally demanded of more seasoned staff, such as data-driven decision-making and people management... Eleanor Lightbody, CEO of Luminance, which develops AI for the legal profession, says these middle layers could be squeezed out altogether, “because we are going to hire more juniors, who are really going to understand how AI works, and more seniors [are] staying in the business because [by using AI], they can be more productive and have more capacity”. The challenge for job seekers is that it is hard to find entry-level jobs that allow them to develop the higher proficiency that seniorised roles now require... Reliance on AI is increasing the demand for distinctively human “soft skills” — or “power skills”, as some are now calling them — such as creativity, empathy, judgment and networking ability. PwC’s jobs report found that new tasks added to job adverts for AI-exposed roles were two and a half times as likely to call for such capabilities.

3. Very good description of how China became so dominant.

It enticed unsuspecting giants such as Apple, Tesla, Motorola, and Lucent with low-cost logic. When sufficient local manpower was trained, subcontractors developed, and stakes became important, China applied the squeeze. China would break contracts, cancel licences, coerce the transfer of technology, control pricing, withdraw incentives, force equity participation, conscript technology and evict them. Huawei, BYD, CATL, and SAIC are some examples of the resulting indigenous giants that emerged. In an act of silent invasion, conscripted technologies have been converted into military capability. It is dominant as a supplier of several raw materials, such as rare earth minerals, gallium, graphite, and lithium; a dominant buyer of soya from Brazil and iron ore and wines from Australia; a financier of BRI projects; and a provider of processing technologies for Chilean copper and lithium in select South American countries. With this web of dependencies, it can choke several factories.

4. Janan Ganesh feels that for Britain to start making real reforms, the incoming PM Andy Burnham must do more welfare and subsidies and discredit the whole .ideology.

What is the precedent for a rich democracy doing pre-emptive economic reform? Which nation ever made controversial structural changes — involving winners and losers — to prevent a crisis, rather than in response to one? Southern Europe needed the Eurozone panic of 2009 onwards to make spending cuts. Hawke, Keating, Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan were reacting to 1970s stagflation. François Mitterrand in 1983 was reacting to a market shock that to some extent he’d created. Reform only happens when it absolutely has to happen. So try again, prime minister. Fail again. Fail worse.

5. Japan embraces a more proactive government-driven economic growth policy.

Sanae Takaichi's cabinet approved a policy blueprint that targets a combined $2.3tn of public and private sector investment between now and 2040 in 17 chosen sectors. Ministries will be able to make budget requests without upper limits; budget construction, according to the document, will be “fundamentally” changed. Much of the blueprint is about economic security, but a refreshingly large amount is about growth... possibly the most meaningful lines in the new strategy place Japan’s future efforts in the global context. “Among advanced countries, there is a big trend of the government and private sectors working together on large-scale, long-term industrial spending,” it read... The government would strive, the document further promised, to meet the challenges of “the era of great global competition between industrial policies”... 

On the same day that the blueprint was agreed, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry produced separate guidance for growth investment — an effort to encourage Japan’s 4,000-odd listed companies to shift more of their endeavours towards growth and a witheringly blunt critique of how matters are at the moment. Within Japan’s 350 largest companies (by sales), 65 per cent of invested capital remains locked in what it calls value-destructive segments, according to METI’s research. In the US, the equivalent ratio is 39 per cent. Both Takaichi’s blueprint and the new METI guidelines are attempting a new version of industrial policy that not only seeks to spur growth, but places a huge bet on the government’s ability to encourage companies in a way that market forces have not.

6. Kevin Warsh is trying to scale down forward guidance

“Financial market prices are probably the most important source of information to guide central bankers,” he said at his inaugural press conference last month. “But when all the financial markets are doing is reflecting back what we’ve said, then we’re taking the most important source of information and we’re being blind to it.” Many agree with the Fed chair’s view that central banks’ focus on predictability has led to a world in which markets obsess more over what officials say than what is actually happening in the economy. “Forward guidance has turned markets into a mirror,” says Ajay Rajadhyaksha, global chair of research at Barclays. “The Fed watches markets; markets watch the Fed. And no one’s actually watching the economy.”...
Recent research by the US central bank suggests its decisions also have an outsized impact on equity markets, leading to big changes in how investors price stocks. Advocates of forward guidance say it helps avoid the sort of surprises for the markets that feed overall volatility and eventually raise borrowing costs as investors demand greater compensation to stomach market swings. Warsh and his allies counter that the attempt to pacify markets simply encourages greater risk-taking, damping short-term volatility but storing up bigger shocks for later. The debate is all the more important because of the backdrop: the surge in borrowing over almost two decades. Government debt around the world has risen sharply following the global financial crisis, the Eurozone crisis, the pandemic and the wars of the 2020s...

Some analysts highlight the so-called taper tantrum of 2013 — when markets were unnerved by Fed statements about its plans to shrink its balance sheet as a result of officials’ false sense of certainty. Others link the 2023 collapse of the US’s Silicon Valley Bank to central bankers’ previous pledge to keep interest rates low.

This is a very important factoid about Fed communications.

Between 1990 and 2022, an era in which the status and prominence of central banks steadily grew, US 10-year government bond yields fell by more than 7 percentage points. All of the downward moves throughout that period took place during the three days around Fed meetings, rather than in response to political events or economic data. But the relationship broke down after the Fed appeared flat-footed on inflation in 2022. The Riksbank data shows that the central bank’s meetings had little to do with the subsequent rise in yields.

An important concern for the bond markets is the sharply increased volume of Treasuries held by hedge funds that use leverage to bet on tiny differences in interest rates. 

The Fed estimates that large hedge funds’ holdings of US Treasuries doubled between 2023 and 2025, faster than the growth of the market as a whole. Such funds now own more than $2.5tn in Treasuries, according to the US central bank and US Treasury data. Such sums dwarf China’s official holdings — not an exhaustive account of the country’s exposure — which have fallen from $1tn in December 2021 to $659bn in May 2026, according to US Treasury statistics. Moreover, the Bank for International Settlements, the central bankers’ bank, has warned that the hedge funds might have to dial back their stakes in government bond markets even quicker than they arrived — a possibility it describes as one of the most troubling financial stability risks in the world today.

Then there are the other concerns for bond markets.

The Bank of England said this month that AI hyperscalers borrowed more in the first half of 2026 than in the whole of 2025. So far this year they have accumulated as much new debt as the UK government. An interest-rate surprise from the Warsh Fed might not only unsettle Treasury yields but set off a vicious circle of margin calls — when a sudden price movement in assets bought with borrowed money requires an injection of capital — and fire sales by hedge funds that could create a dash for cash.

7. A cautionary tale on the difficulty of private enterprise establishing and managing entire railway systems comes from the example of Brightline Express, which connects Miami and Orlando, and became operational in 2023.

Brightline traces its roots to 2007, when Edens’ Fortress spent $3.5bn to acquire Florida East Coast Railway, then a listed freight transport company. Its tracks spanned from north to south in the Sunshine State, and construction for what would become Brightline began in 2014, with the Orlando service beginning a decade later. In a 2024 bond prospectus, Brightline executives forecast that by 2026 they would have nearly 8mn annual riders, split roughly evenly between the Orlando-Miami route and a more local service in South Florida. That base of customers was expected to generate $700mn in revenue... Even with customer levels up 16 per cent year to date through May this year, ridership will struggle to hit 4mn this year. Operating income has at best reached break-even before debt service costs... 

The promoter Wes Edens’ Fortress wrote off its investment long ago, and it is now hedge fund bondholders who are jockeying for control of Brightline. But alongside distressed debt specialists such as Nut Tree Capital Management, Aristeia Capital and Redwood Capital Management, there are a handful of more staid asset managers including Nuveen and First Eagle also at the table. As well as corporate bonds issued by subsidiaries, the group’s debt stack includes more than $2bn of traditional municipal bonds, half of which are guaranteed by a bond insurer.

1. Ruchir Sharma goes behind the record corporate profits share of GDP in the US (11% of GDP, up from 7% in the 1990s) and finds two problems. One, the share is boosted by the lower corporate tax rates which translate into higher fiscal deficits.

Lately the US deficit has risen to more than 6 per cent of GDP and a deficit that high reflects a large transfer of income to households and corporations. Under a well-established accounting formula, the Kalecki-Levy Equation, corporate profits are in part a mirror image of the government’s deficit. Based on this framework, deficits were the single largest contributor to the increase in earnings as a share of GDP since the late 1990s. And in this decade, deficits have accounted for more than half of corporate profits, twice the level of the dotcom era. Strip away government support, and US profits look less extraordinary.

Second, the share falls sharply when we include the universe of private companies.

Since the dotcom bust in 2000, the number of publicly listed businesses has fallen by half, with many new companies remaining private for longer, funded by private equity and venture capital. This is the new home of excess and weak earnings. As a result, the profit growth of the average business listed in standard indices provides a misleading picture of the overall economy. Profit growth has been less impressive once the private companies are included in the data. Further, private firms planning to go public are much larger and less profitable today than in the 1990s. The biggest names in the IPO pipeline, including SpaceX, Anthropic and OpenAI, have little to no profits.

2. Britain's much-delayed HS2 railway project's cost has increased by another £20bn to £102.7bn (a range of estimates ( £87.7bn to £102.7bn in 2025 prices) and will be completed only by the 2040s, with the first trains not expected till 2036. 

3. Why has oil not hit $150 or $200 despite about 12-15 mbpd being taken out?
One of the biggest surprises for the oil market has been China, the world’s largest importer. It slashed inbound shipments by almost 40 per cent in May compared to last year’s average, according to Vortexa Ltd. The reduction is enough to offset anywhere between a third and a fifth of the barrels lost to the war, depending on the estimates used. At the same time, the US has emerged as the world’s most important swing supplier since launching strikes on Iran in late February. American crude and fuel exports in May were more than 2 million barrels a day higher than the average for all of last year. Other emergency measures have also eased the strain. Governments around the globe coordinated a historic release of strategic reserves, while Gulf producers rerouted shipments through alternative export routes. Some tankers continued moving cargoes via the strait despite the risks, using increasingly opaque methods to avoid military threats... Saudi Arabia’s East-West pipeline shipped millions of barrels a day to the Red Sea, while the United Arab Emirates has been piping barrels to the port of Fujairah outside the gulf.

And this is important. 

Another factor keeping a lid on prices has been Trump’s relentless jawboning, making it hard for even the most bullish traders to hold long positions for prolonged periods of time. Open interest in Brent crude futures is the lowest since August as elevated market volatility forces traders to roll back risk exposure. Steep price drops on the prospect of peace have pushed many oil bulls to the sidelines, leaving them to hold small positions for very limited periods of time, several traders said. The lack of risk-taking has helped keep a lid on financial flows, while supply levers have averted the worst hit to the market. The question now, is whether that can last without a peace deal.

4. The evidence to date points to widespread AI use not translating into anything proportionate in terms of business value creation. Sample this from the software industry pointed out by John Burn-Murdoch

5. EU energy subsidies during the Ukraine invasion and spike in gas prices. 

Between late 2021 and mid 2023, EU countries spent about €540bn on subsidising energy prices to protect consumers from price shocks in the aftermath of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and to cushion energy-intensive industries from soaring costs. Of that total, €158bn was accounted for by Germany, whose industry heavily depended on Russian gas supplies. In the wake of the Ukraine energy shock, Brussels also relaxed state aid rules for the rest of the decade to allow governments to subsidise clean technologies and industrial decarbonisation.

6. Emerging AI-related roles in the software industry.

Agent engineers who build and fine-tune agents; architects who determine how humans and agents divide tasks; AI governance specialists who keep agents compliant and accountable; AI transformation advisors who help enterprises navigate workflow reimagination; solution designers who translate business problems into agentic solution architectures; and AI assurance partners who help clients govern their own AI deployments.

7. Rana Faroohar makes the point that we may be at the cusp of a new investment super-cycle driven by the combination of AI, clean energy, defence, and manufacturing.

In a recent issue of his TPW Advisory Monthly report, investor Jay Pelosky did just that, collating data on AI, clean energy and defence spending around the world from sources including Gartner, BloombergNEF (on energy), the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute and the International Institute for Strategic Studies (on defence) and others. So far, $6.9tn was spent globally in 2025 in the three areas, and the number will probably reach $10tn by the end of this year and $16tn by 2030. 

What’s more, says Pelosky, these three areas reinforce one another, amplifying potential investment. AI requires more energy. The move towards tech sovereignty in the US, China and even Europe (in a nascent way) adds to the need for investment in AI and energy, while the move towards a more 19th-century “spheres of influence” geopolitics calls for greater defence spending globally. Add to this the desire of policymakers in all three regions to increase resilience in critical sectors affected by concentration or globally dispersed supply chains: products such as advanced semiconductors, active pharmaceuticals and lithium batteries, for example.

8. Rupee trajectory over the last two years

The rupee depreciating by nearly 6 per cent against the dollar in the first five months of 2026 alone, exceeding the combined full-year declines recorded in 2025 (5 per cent) and 2024 (2.8 per cent). The rupee touched a record intraday low of 96.57 per dollar on May 19 and has lost roughly 14 per cent of its value against the greenback over the past two years. Against the euro, the erosion has been equally stark, with the Indian currency declining by more than 7 per cent over the past 12 months and nearly 16 per cent in the past two years, he added.

The problem with a depreciating rupee is that foreign investors now must earn an extra 14% over the last two years to offset the depreciation.

9. India's FTAs may be creating a perverse incentive for even domestic manufacturers due to the inversion of duty structures.

Many finished goods now enter India at low or zero duty from partners such as ASEAN, Japan, South Korea, the UAE and Australia. As a result, Indian manufacturers often pay high duties on imported inputs, especially those sourced from non-FTA countries, while competing against finished products imported duty-free under FTAs. For example, steel and aluminium attract MFN duties of 7.5-10 per cent, but machinery, industrial equipment and engineering products made from these materials can enter India duty-free under several FTAs. Indian manufacturers, therefore, face higher input costs when competing with tariff-free imported machinery produced with globally priced inputs.

Similar distortions exist in chemicals, plastics, rubber and textiles. Duties on inputs such as caustic soda, soda ash, polypropylene, PVC and SBR raise production costs. At the same time, many finished products in these sectors can be imported at low or zero duty... the growing incentive for firms to manufacture outside India rather than within it. When raw materials and components attract duties in India, but finished products can be imported duty-free from FTA partners, companies may find it more profitable to locate production abroad and export back to the Indian market. In such cases, FTAs effectively encourage offshore manufacturing at the expense of domestic value addition. ASEAN countries are increasingly becoming manufacturing hubs for supplying the Indian market.

10. The Gulf War has resulted in a surge in Chinese exports of solar panels, especially to South East Asian and African countries. This came at a time when many Chinese firms laden with excess capacity, low margins, and large indebtedness were facing an existential crisis. 

11. The revival of manufacturing in the US hits the wall of labour scarcity.

Perhaps the largest problem for would-be reshorers is a lack of labour. Despite widespread nostalgia for manufacturing jobs, new US factories often struggle to find reliable workers. When Japanese group Panasonic started producing electric vehicle batteries near Reno, Nevada in 2017, the company suffered more than 100 per cent annual turnover in its early years. Not only were employees reluctant to take jobs in an access-controlled, sterile environment, but every November, the group would lose workers to seasonal logistics jobs at nearby Amazon facilities that paid a similar wage... Despite political enthusiasm for reviving manufacturing, jobs posted on LinkedIn receive fewer applications than other sectors it competes with, such as technology.

12. More on the SpaceX bubble.

Goldman Sachs, the investment bank leading the IPO, projects that SpaceX’s AI revenues need to increase 100-fold by 2030, reaching $322bn from $3.2bn today. But its AI lab remains far behind Anthropic, Google and OpenAI at the frontier, and shows little sign of catching up. Morgan Stanley also estimates that overall revenue needs to increase 180-fold to $3.4tn by 2040, up from $18.7bn last year. Earnings must flip from a $4.9bn loss in 2025 to $2.7tn.

SpaceX ends the first day of trading at 20% premium on its $135 listing price, which raised $75 bn and left it with a valuation of $2.1 trillion. The listing prospectus claimed at $28.5 trillion addressable market.

SpaceX plans to use the IPO proceeds for a range of ambitious projects, from its skyscraper-sized reusable Starship rocket, founding a 1mn-strong colony on Mars, starting a lunar economy to building a network of orbital AI data centres capable of delivering vast amounts of computing capacity... A portion must also go towards repaying a $20bn bridge loan the group took out in March to back its merger with Musk’s lossmaking AI start-up, xAI, and social media platform X.

This is staggering. 

It also hands Musk a vast financial windfall, with his 42 per cent stake in SpaceX valued at more than $800bn. Combined with his $280bn holding in electric vehicle maker Tesla, his wealth has now surpassed $1tn, equivalent to about a third of the market value of the UK’s FTSE 100 index.

Richard Waters explains the rationale driving the astronomical valuation.

It is hard to find changes in SpaceX’s business prospects that account for a fourfold valuation jump within the space of a year. Rather, it is testament to Musk’s unrivalled grip on the public imagination, transmuted into Wall Street gold. When the history of SpaceX’s record-breaking IPO is written, it will go down as a textbook case of Musk’s ability to conjure a compelling vision of the tech future for both Silicon Valley and Wall Street, ably backed by an army of promoters in the financial world. (With fees estimated at about $500mn, it’s probably not surprising that there were few warnings from the Wall Street establishment that the shares might be overvalued.)... 

Musk has been busy in recent months spinning up new visions capable of embellishing his company’s prospects... What starts out sounding like science fiction fantasy doesn’t take long to seem not only plausible but even downright likely. Wall Street has been more than willing to translate Musk’s tech dreams into financial projections capable of supporting the sky-high valuation, implausible as those numbers may seem. Goldman Sachs, the lead bank on the IPO, predicted that revenue would soar to $474bn by 2030, most of it from AI...
The IPO involved only about 4 per cent of SpaceX’s shares, but a high level of demand was built in, partly because some index investors will soon be required to add the company to their portfolios. Even without the index funds, SpaceX’s sheer size — at about 2.5 per cent of US stock market capitalisation — has made it too big for many investment managers to avoid.

13. South Korean capitalism is spreading wealth around

Samsung Electronics... agreed last month for employees to share the chipmaker’s blockbuster profits from an AI-led boom... SK Hynix... handed employees a similar profit-sharing deal last year... Samsung is also going to give Won500mn loans at low rates to employees... Samsung and SK Hynix together control much of the market for the advanced memory chips used in AI servers. Employees at both companies are in line for average annual bonus payouts of Won600mn, which compares with a national average salary of about Won50mn... district of Hwaseong... expected to gain corporate income tax receipts of Won1tn to Won1.3tn from Samsung alone this year, an extraordinary sum for a city authority whose annual budget is about Won3.5tn.

14. Germany amps up spending on its ailing railways sector, where on-time arrivals of long-distance trains have fallen from 84% two decades back to 60%. 

By the end of 2026, Deutsche Bahn will have rebuilt 900 kilometres of train lines since 2024, close to a quarter of its 2036 target. That is equivalent to half of the roughly 1,900 kilometres of new lines built after 1945. Flix, which started as a coach operator but also runs long-distance trains, has earmarked €2.4bn for up to 65 new high-speed trains that it plans to roll out from 2028. Italian high-speed train operator Italo also has ambitions for Germany, promising up to €3.6bn of investment in new trains if it gets multiyear access to the network.

1. This captures the big problems with Chinese exports to Europe.
In the early 1970s workers at Dongfeng, or “East Wind”, imported American trucks to inform their early attempts at making off-road vehicles destined for the People’s Liberation Army. Nearly 60 years later Stellantis, the European owner of the Jeep brand, is partnering with Dongfeng to produce a new battery-powered version of the iconic American light utility vehicle for consumers in China, the Middle East and south-east Asia... International carmakers, struggling for survival amid an expensive transition to electric vehicles, are turning to China’s technologically advanced and cost-efficient factories as manufacturing bases for their global businesses. Foreign companies already account for around two-fifths of China’s car exports to Europe, when joint ventures with local groups are included, according to the Rhodium Group, a US consultancy... Indeed, Volkswagen, BMW, Nissan, Hyundai and others are increasing exports from Chinese factories with spare capacity to markets other than Europe and the US.

2. A new approach to making clean hydrogen

Most of the hydrogen the world uses today — mainly for fertilizer and refining — is produced using natural gas in a process that creates lots of emissions. In recent years, the United States and other countries have invested billions of dollars trying to make “green” hydrogen with wind and solar power, but it has proved difficult and expensive. Now a growing number of companies think a better answer could lie underground. Dozens of start-ups are trying to find large reservoirs of natural hydrogen thought to exist below the surface. Others, like Vema, are trying to stimulate the processes that generate that hydrogen, without any emissions. It’s a field often referred to as “geologic hydrogen.”...
Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe, and it gets made naturally in the Earth’s crust when certain iron-rich minerals react with water and rust. This process, known as serpentinization, often leaves behind rocks with a mottled green color. For a long time, many geologists believed that any natural hydrogen produced this way was unlikely to accumulate in large underground deposits because the tiny molecules would slip away through cracks in rocks. Lately, that conventional wisdom has been upended... By the 2020s, scientists were publishing papers estimating that natural hydrogen deposits underground could supply the world’s needs for hundreds of years. One promising location was North America’s Midcontinent Rift, an enormous formation of iron-rich basalt that stretches 1,200 miles from Kansas to Michigan... The Energy Department has estimated that geologic hydrogen could be produced for less than $1 per kilogram. That would be cheaper than hydrogen made from fossil fuels and one-sixth the current cost of making hydrogen from wind and solar power.

It has started attracting private capital.

Companies are racing to find the fuel. One of the best-funded start-ups, Koloma, has raised $400 million from investors including Amazon and United Airlines and has drilled exploratory wells in Iowa. HyTerra, an Australian firm, is searching for hydrogen and helium in Kansas and Nebraska. Not everyone thinks the best strategy is to search for natural deposits underground. A better idea, some say, is to create them. In Quebec, a startup called Vema Hydrogen plans to spend the rest of the year injecting water into its underground test wells to see if it can speed up the process of serpentinization that creates natural hydrogen underground... Vema has already raised $15 million and is working to raise more. There are ophiolites all over the Earth, including a ridge stretching from Costa Rica to Alaska, and the company is looking at sites in Oregon and California as well. Other start-ups, including one out of M.I.T. called GeoRedox, are developing their own approaches.

3.  Semiconductor chips are one area where China lags badly.

Chinese companies will most likely make just 2 percent as many A.I. chips as foreign firms do this year, said Tim Fist, a director at the Institute for Progress, a think tank in Washington. The production gap between Chinese and foreign manufacturers is especially big for memory chips, which are essential for the large calculations done by A.I. Companies outside China will make 70 times as much memory storage capacity this year as Chinese chip makers will, Mr. Fist said...The inability to get essential tools from ASML has been a major chokehold for Chinese chip makers. Since U.S. officials led an effort to lobby the Dutch government to block shipments to China, no Chinese company has been able to buy ASML’s most advanced tools. Instead, Chinese chip makers have recruited engineers with experience using those machines at TSMC, the world’s top chip maker. And now, Chinese start-ups are trying to make their own chip manufacturing equipment... China’s A.I. companies are trying to get the computing power they need by strapping together numerous less powerful chips. Huawei has taken such an approach... The chips Huawei does produce are prone to defects and use more electricity than cutting-edge foreign ones.

In a sign of Bab el-Mandeb strait’s strategic importance, Djibouti – whose coastline runs along the waterway – is home to military bases of several major countries, including the US, Italy, France, Japan, and the sole People’s Liberation Army base outside China. The Bab el-Mandeb strait is among several trade chokepoints that, when blocked, require vessels to travel more than 8,000 miles. These also include the Strait of Gibraltar and the Suez and Panama Canals...
The knock-on effects of a blockage can be much more significant where there is no alternative route to fall back on, as with the Strait of Hormuz, the Øresund between Denmark and Sweden, and the Turkish straits, comprising the Dardanelles and the Bosphorus, which act as the gateway between the Black Sea and Mediterranean. With the Hormuz strait, says Jasper Verschuur, co-author of a study into the risks of the world’s 24 narrow straits, “there is no alternative for 80 per cent of the trade”.

9. Sajjid Chinoy writes that India's economic problem is less of a current account and more a capital account problem, arising from the sharp decline in FDI and FPI inflows. In the circumstances, he argues that demand compression can be counterproductive by slowing growth. He suggests a combination of depreciation and augmentation measures for foreign capital inflows.
The objective must be to attract a large-enough quantum of near-term capital inflows across multiple avenues — even if it involves a subsidised swap — to change exporter, importer and investor behaviour, and prevent a destabilising overshooting of the Rupee.

I am not sure how this is at all possible precisely when capital is flowing the other direction.

14. Ukraine's drones are inflicting massive damage and casualties on Russia as the country forces its way into its most favourable situation since the war began.
Some intelligence reports indicate that a staggering 1.2mn Russian soldiers have been killed or wounded since February 2022, a casualty figure no major power has suffered in a single conflict since the second world war... Backed by some €90bn in EU loans, Kyiv is pouring resources into domestic arms production in a bid to reduce dependence on western weapons and the political constraints that often accompany them. It has moved at breakneck speed to scale up the manufacture of land, sea and air drones, artillery systems, electronic warfare equipment, and even ballistic and cruise missiles.

15. The consulting industry is threatened by AI.  

Few industries are debating AI’s implications more intensely than consulting, whose core work of research, summarising data and producing neatly designed PowerPoint presentations is highly automatable. Richard Susskind, co-author of The Future of the Professions, says consultants are more vulnerable than other mainstream professions in part because the work of junior staff “can now be taken on, with mild supervision, by increasingly capable AI systems”. The sector now has two new competitors, he adds: “the AI-empowered client and disruptive start-ups. Both challenge the conventional model.”... AI also threatens one of professional services’ foundational economic models: billing by time. When a bot can review thousands of contracts in minutes and draft complex documents in seconds, the relationship between hours worked and value delivered begins to break down. Increasingly, clients are demanding pricing linked to outcomes rather than labour inputs.

Weekend reading links

1. Jemima Kelly calls out the delusion among the successful Silicon Valley venture capitalists about the limits to their knowledge.
“If you go back, like, 400 years ago it never would have occurred to anybody to be introspective,” said a great sage of Silicon Valley last week, during the modern-day equivalent of a Socratic dialogue (a podcast). “Great men of history didn’t sit around doing this stuff.” The sage was none other than Marc Andreessen — venture capitalist, crypto enthusiast, devoted Democrat turned Donald Trump adviser, and author of the 2023 late-capitalist cry for help, the “Techno-Optimist Manifesto” (“love doesn’t scale . . . let’s stick with money”). The man who bet big on Web3 (remember that?) and NFTs (remember them?), and who once described criticisms of the metaverse as “reality privilege”. (Meta, on whose board Andreessen sits, announced this week it was all but pulling the plug on the metaverse.) The a16z founder was proudly explaining to Founders podcast host David Senra that he had “zero” levels of introspection. “Move forward. Go,” was his own anti-introspective mantra. “I’ve found that people who dwell on the past get stuck in the past. It’s a problem at work and it’s a problem at home.” He went on to claim that the very concept of the individual was only invented a few hundred years ago and that it wasn’t until the start of the 20th century that we started to believe in guilt and self-criticism.

She says something which more people should be talking about.

Andreessen seems to conflate the idea of overthinking, and even of guilt, with introspection, a word deriving from Latin that simply means “looking within”... He also fails to realise that the current era is the only one in which we would even have the option of not being introspective; the only one in which the a16z-backed merchants of the attention economy have made non-optional boredom extinct. In a recent X post, Andreessen described his “information consumption” thus: “1/4 X, 1/4 podcast interviews of the smartest practitioners, 1/4 talking to the leading AI models, and 1/4 reading old books. The opportunity cost of anything else is far too high, and rising daily.” (One wonders whether he reads the old books, or asks those leading AI models for their summaries.) My main issue with Andreessen is not so much that he’s wrong; it’s that he’s so confident about it. He sounded similarly confident when he told us that bitcoin represented a breakthrough akin to the internet, that Web3 was the future and that we shouldn’t fear AI because “the moral of every story is the good guys win”. We seem to believe, as a society, that wealth, influence and confidence can be equated with wisdom.

2. The market does not think that the war is about to end anytime soon.

In the last two weeks, there has been a big build-up of call options — which give a holder the right, but not the obligation, to buy an underlying futures contract — compared with put options, which give the holder the right to sell a futures contract. In the first week of the conflict, the opposite was true. That suggests the market believes we are in for further upside in oil prices rather than downside. The average strike for call options expiring in June expiration was $126 a barrel of oil whereas for put options it is $81. Worth noting, there is a small build in call options with a June strike price of $450 a barrel.

3. Off-grid energy is on the rise in the US to power data centres.

By the end of 2025, an estimated 39 percent of the gas power capacity being developed in the United States was designed to serve data centers on-site, according to the Global Energy Monitor, a nonprofit organization that tracks energy projects. That is up from 5 percent at the end of 2024...

Wait times vary by region, but it now takes an average of four years or more for data centers to connect to U.S. grids, according to JLL, a real estate services firm... Companies are gravitating to gas because it can theoretically generate electricity all day, unlike the wind or sun. And smaller gas generators and engines can be installed much faster than nuclear power plants... Industry analysts and executives also question whether power plants built alongside data centers will remain competitive if it becomes easier to connect to the grid.
3. Paul Graham has a brilliant essay on how the brand has become the product itself, illustrated with the example of Swiss watch makers. 
The most striking thing to me about the brand age is the sheer strangeness of it. The zombie watch brands that appear to be independent and even have their own retail stores, and yet are all owned by a few holding companies. The giant, awkwardly shaped watches that reverse 500 years of progress in making them smaller. The business model that requires a company to rebuy their own watches on the secondary market to catch rogue customers. The very concept of rogue customers. It's all so strange. And the reason it's strange is that there's no function for form to follow.

Up to the end of the golden age, mechanical watches were necessary. You needed them to know the time. And that constraint gave both the watches and the watchmaking industry a meaningful shape. There were certainly some strange-looking watches made during the golden age. They weren't all beautifully minimal. But when golden age watchmakers made a strange-looking watch, they knew they were doing it. In fact they give the impression of having done it as a deliberate exercise, to avoid getting into a rut.

That's not why brand age watches look strange. Brand age watches look strange because they have no practical function. Their function is to express brand, and while that is certainly a constraint, it's not the clean kind of constraint that generates good things. The constraints imposed by brand ultimately depend on some of the worst features of human psychology. So when you have a world defined only by brand, it's going to be a weird, bad world.

4. Interesting correlation between Truth Social posts of President Trump and oil market actions.

Traders made bets worth half a billion dollars in the oil market about 15 minutes before Donald Trump’s post touting “productive” talks with Iran sent the price of crude tumbling and ignited volatility in other assets. Roughly 6,200 Brent and West Texas Intermediate futures contracts changed hands between 6.49am and 6.50am New York time on Monday, just a quarter of an hour ahead of the US president’s post on Truth Social that there had in recent days been “productive conversations” with Tehran to end the war in Iran. The notional value of those trades was $580mn, according to FT calculations based on Bloomberg data... It was not known whether one entity or several entities were behind Monday’s trades. Trump’s announcement at 7.04am triggered a sharp sell-off across global energy markets and jumps in S&P 500 stock index futures and European equities as investors dialled back bets of a prolonged conflict.
The well-timed trades echoed the flurry of large highly profitable bets made on prediction market Polymarket on the timing of the US’s attacks in recent months on Iran and Venezuela... Several hedge funds noted that this was one of a number of examples in recent months of large trades being made ahead of official US government announcements. One trader at a major hedge fund said energy consultants had recently noticed several large block trades that they found to be unusually timed. Another portfolio manager said a series of large and well-timed trades had created a “level of frustration” among investors. “My gut from watching markets for the last 25 years is this is really abnormal,” he added. “It’s Monday morning, there’s no important data today, there aren’t any Fed speakers you’d want to front run. It’s an unusually large trade for a day with no event risk . . . Somebody just got a lot richer.”

After the War broke out, the statements of Trump and his team have sharply lowered prices. Researchers somewhere are surely working on these to scrutinise market actions emerging alongside these decisions. 

5. Ed Luce brilliantly points to a striking home truths about the war in the Middle East.

One moment, Trump is threatening “an amount of strength and power that Iran has never seen or witnessed before”. Then, roughly 36 hours later, he declares that the US and Iran have been having “very good and productive conversations”. Few took the latter on trust. It is a strange situation where the world must await a statement from Iran to check whether there was any truth to what a US president said. Iran replied that no talks had taken place. Who were we to believe? 

... Trump will dial the invective up or down depending on Iran’s apparent negotiating position. The one offer Iran will never make is to give up its ability to disrupt the global energy markets. Yet that is the one thing Trump must have. Indirect talks are thus geared to swing from wild threat to outsized promise in line with Trump’s mood. Each time he is exposed as having made an empty threat that failed to push Iran into the desired concession, he will need to step up his threat level. This used to be known as the credibility gap. It does not take a seer to guess that at some point he will hint at using nuclear weapons.

6. A less discussed risk associated with the Gulf war is that on the semiconductor industry. Tej Parikh writes that the chip industry will face supply chain squeezes as the war drags on.

The GCC countries have generated a current account surplus of more than $800bn in the past four years... Over the years, the GCC countries have expanded the scale and scope of their strategies to invest their patient capital, embracing the full spectrum of public and private markets, direct investments and more. Along the way, the countries have built deep financial relationships around the world and, most recently, the GCC has been at the vanguard of investments in AI, life sciences and robotics.

He points to reduced revenues and increased war reconstruction expenditures as likely to lower surplus flows into the global markets. This would come at a time when the global financial markets are feeling the pressure of sharply increased government deficit financing, refinancing of maturing debt, and a massive surge in AI investment-related borrowings. He says that the net impact on bond yields, even if in the short- to medium-term, can be significant. 

8. It can have adverse long-term impacts on the energy markets.

Critical Gulf energy infrastructure that was presumed to be safe is now seen as vulnerable, he said. A precedent has been set. “Buyers will price that risk for longer than the initial outage itself,” Jan-Eric Fahnrich, a senior analyst at Rystad Energy, wrote in an analysis. Countries in Asia and Europe, which depend on L.N.G., are likely to face more expensive gas prices long after the Strait of Hormuz reopens.

“This is by far the largest disruption of crude oil and refined products that we’ve ever seen in history,” said Jason Miller, a professor in supply chain management at Michigan State University. “Petroleum goes into everything,” he said, so the inflationary impact could be enormous… Higher energy prices tend to slow economic growth, increase unemployment and speed inflation. It is also important to note that the price of diesel and jet fuel — which are processed differently — generally rise faster than the gasoline that drivers buy at the pump. And that has a disproportionate effect on moving goods around the globe, whether by plane, ship or truck. Those elevated energy prices could eventually increase the priceof practically every avocado, automobile, pair of sneakers, cellphone and drug that is bought and sold around the world.  

9. Nice article that points to how much of Trump's current actions are a replay of what he said and did nearly four decades back

He sketched out the first outlines in 1987, spending $94,801 to place a full-page ad in three US newspapers. The world was “laughing” at America’s leaders over the Gulf crisis triggered by the Iran-Iraq war, Trump declared. As the US escorted tankers through the Strait of Hormuz, he said Washington was trying to “protect ships we don’t own, carrying oil we don’t need, destined for allies who won’t help”. It is a line that his tirades echo today. But back then, as he tested the waters for a possible presidential run, Trump had concluded the problem was a lack of “backbone”. Appearing a few weeks later at a New Hampshire rotary club event in 1987, Trump sneered at how the Iranian navy — “little runabouts with machine guns” — had held America to ransom. “Why couldn’t we go in there and take some of their oilfields near the coast?” he asked. The then 41-year-old businessman put it even more starkly in a 1988 interview with the Guardian: “One bullet shot at one of our men or ships, and I’d do a number on Kharg Island. I’d go in and take it.”

This is similar to his belief that tariffs should be used to correct trade deficits, which he advocated in the case of Japan in the 1980s. 

10. Saudi Arabia may be a bigger proponent of regime change than Israel. A NYT report suggests.

Prince Mohammed, the people familiar with the discussions said, has argued that Iran poses a long-term threat to the Gulf that can only be eliminated by getting rid of the government. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel also views Iran as a long-term threat, but analysts say Israeli officials would probably view a failed Iranian state that is too caught up in internal turmoil to menace Israel as a win, while Saudi Arabia views a failed state in Iran as a grave and direct security threat... 
Prince Mohammed has argued that the United States should consider putting troops in Iran to seize energy infrastructure and force the government out of power, according to the people briefed by U.S. officials... while Prince Mohammed probably preferred to avoid a war, he is concerned that if Mr. Trump pulls back now, Saudi Arabia and the rest of the Middle East will be left to confront an emboldened and furious Iran on their own. In this view, they say, a half-finished offensive would expose Saudi Arabia to frequent Iranian attacks. Such a scenario could also leave Iran with the power to periodically close the Strait of Hormuz.

Last year, Deutsche Bahn’s punctuality fell to the lowest level recorded in the 190 years since the first railway line was opened between Nuremberg and Fürth in Franconia. A mere 60 per cent of all long-distance trains arrived with less than six minutes delay, compared with 90 per cent two decades earlier. But this data excludes all of the trains that were cancelled. Deutsche Bahn now underperforms even the worst British train operator.

An estimated 100,000 talented Chinese teenagers are selected every year to enter a network of science-focused talent streams run across the country’s top high schools. The genius classes, also called “experiment” or “competition” classes, coach gifted students to compete in international competitions in maths, physics, chemistry, biology and computer science... For decades, genius classes have been turning out the leading lights of China’s science and technology sectors... Genius-class graduates include the founder of TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, and the core developers behind its powerful content recommendation algorithm. Both leaders of China’s two biggest ecommerce platforms, Taobao and PDD, came from the genius stream, as did the billionaire who started the food delivery “super-app” Meituan. The two brothers behind the chipmaker Cambricon, now one of the leading Chinese rivals to Nvidia, were in genius classes. So were the core engineers behind leading large language models at DeepSeek and Alibaba’s Qwen, not to mention Tencent’s celebrated new chief scientist, poached from OpenAI late last year...

China’s genius classes differ in important ways from talent streams in the west. First, the system dwarfs its international competitors in scale. Second, it is state-driven. China graduates around five million majors in science, technology, engineering and maths every year, according to the state media Xinhua, compared with about half a million in the US. Tens of thousands of these graduates are genius-class students, taken out of regular classes for an intense period of study between the ages of 16-18. While others swot for China’s feared college admissions exams, the gaokao, those on the genius path have the chance to bypass that fate altogether, bagging places at top universities before they are out of high school, depending on their results in starry international competitions. The best students continue to more advanced talent schemes at the top Chinese universities, such as the elite computer science programmes at Tsinghua and Shanghai Jiao Tong universities... Starting in the 2000s, university admissions were reformed, giving more flexibility to colleges to allocate places without relying solely on the results of the gaokao. National competitions were set up for students at the end of their sophomore year of high school. Those who won top prizes in the national exam could receive direct admission to one of the 985 Project universities, China’s 39-member Ivy League equivalent...

The chance to skip the gaokao was a strong incentive for students to participate in the genius stream. The traditional pathway for high-school students in China is three years of study in the gaokao’s mandatory subjects of Chinese, English and Maths, as well as three more chosen subjects from physics, chemistry, biology, history, geography and politics. Exams in all six subjects are taken at the end of the third year. Genius-class students, on the other hand, focus on their “competition subjects”. A student competing in the International Physics Olympiad, for example, needs to not only finish three years of high-school physics but also at least half of the college-level syllabus, in order to be competitive enough to take the national exam.

Should it be any surprise then that Chinese teams sweep most of the gold medals at Olympiads, with 22 out of the 23 contestants sent in 2025 winning gold medals.

After the Russian energy price shock, German households and industry used 17 and 26 per cent less gas respectively. A study of Britain’s response by economists at the Institute for Fiscal Studies found that a 45 per cent rise in residential energy prices triggered a 14 per cent drop in households’ consumption.

A new MGI report identifies nine "super-wizard" companies, omniscalers - Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, Microsoft, Meta, Tesla/SpaceX, Alibaba, Huawei, and Samsung - that are set to dominate many of the 18 fastest growing markets of the future

Collectively they generated $2.7tn of revenue in 2025, a sum larger than the GDP of Italy. They also invested more than $800bn in research and development and capital expenditure, a share of revenue three times greater than at companies in traditional industries... In 2024, the six US omniscalers generated $550bn of operating cash flow. That was 2.5 times the money raised on US equity markets that year and not far shy of the $600bn of total bank lending to the non-financial sector... Over the past 20 years, these nine companies have been active acquirers of smaller businesses, with Alphabet and Microsoft snapping up more than 200 companies apiece. Even when a US judge found Google to have been operating an “illegal monopoly”, he refrained from breaking up the company.

1. On the origins of infrastructure financing in the UK.

In the summer of 1858, Britain’s parliamentarians soaked the curtains in the Palace of Westminster with lime chloride in an attempt to counter the “Great Stink” emanating from the river Thames. It failed. The prime minister demanded the Metropolitan Board of Works construct a sewerage system, legislating to allow the board to raise £3mn. This was to be repaid by a three-penny levy on all London households for 40 years. By 1900, the municipal bond market in England was about 50 per cent of the market for UK government debt. Today it is just 4.7 per cent. Back then, most infrastructure projects were not only financed by the private sector but also backed by hypothecated cash flows from money raised locally. For example, the debt for the 1892 Elan Valley Aqueduct to pipe water into Birmingham was funded by an increase in water rates on businesses and households there. So the residents of, say, Manchester were not funding infrastructure elsewhere.

The UK doesn’t have a productivity puzzle. The causes of Britain’s weak underlying growth are well known and discussed ad nauseam. Why policymakers aren’t delivering is the bigger conundrum. Instability undermines business investment, hiring and planning decisions, and absorbs the political bandwidth that could be used to address lacklustre growth... Uncertainty and slow growth weaken the appeal of UK assets too. Pound sterling and British stocks have underperformed relative to peers over the past decade. Long-term UK government borrowing costs have remained elevated compared with other G7 nations, having come under frequent selling pressure thanks to fiscal mishaps... For all the turbulence, Britain remains attractive. London remains the leading European destination for foreign direct investment. The country’s strengths in finance, university research, tech and life sciences are draws. Cheap assets add to the allure.
12. Fascinating account of China's largest hotel chain, H World, with 12,700 hotels, adding 1700 hotels in 2025, aiming for 20,000 hotels by 2030, and took in 8.3 m guests during last year's Lunar New Year holiday. As a reference, Marriot has 10,000 hotels worldwide. 
H World was launched in 2005 by Ji Qi, co-founder of online travel booking site Ctrip, after he took inspiration from the multi-brand French group Accor... Its Hanting Inn brand, a fixture of the streets of major Chinese cities, often charges well below Rmb300 ($43) a night, while mid-range Ji Hotels typically cost slightly more. H World has several other brands, while internationally it also operates German brand Steigenberger. Its franchise model mirrors an approach that other Chinese businesses have used to expand in consumer sectors from bubble tea to fast food. For the “vast majority” of its franchised hotels, H World retains a degree of control, sending in hotel managers on its own payroll under what it calls a “manachise” approach. In the US, “typically the franchisees decide almost everything . . . we think in China this would not work,” said He. “A lot of people would not abide by your rules.”

The EU went first and went heavy, a binding cross-sector AI Act with tiered risk categories, compliance obligations, and a governance apparatus that could employ a small city. China took the authoritarian-efficiency route. Regulate fast, regulate specifically, and make sure the state retains control over what models can say and do. The US, characteristically, has been light touch at the federal level, leaving governance to a patchwork of executive orders, state laws, and vibes. India, with these guidelines, has landed somewhere interesting, closer to the US in its instinct to avoid a standalone AI law, but far more deliberate in articulating why it is choosing not to regulate horizontally yet. The framework’s core bet is that India’s existing legal infrastructure (the IT Act, the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, sectoral regulators like the RBI and SEBI) can handle most AI risks if enforced properly and updated where needed...

Do not regulate the technology itself, govern its applications through the regulators who already understand those domains. Build incident databases so you learn from failures instead of pretending to prevent them through preemptive compliance theater. Use “techno-legal” mechanisms (standards, system-architecture-level controls, provenance tools) so that compliance scales without armies of auditors. Create sandboxes so regulators can see what actually goes wrong before writing rules. The explicit preference for “innovation over restraint,” listed as a core principle, rejecting the EU’s precautionary posture. Both committees looked at Brussels and decided that regulating AI the way you regulate pharmaceuticals, before you know what the side effects actually are, is a bad trade for a country where AI adoption is still nascent and unevenly distributed... The liability framework it recommended is graded. The regulated entity remains liable to consumers for any losses, but first-time failures where the entity followed prescribed safeguards and reported promptly would not automatically trigger full supervisory penalties. A rigid liability regime that punishes every probabilistic error will cause institutions to constrain AI capabilities to the point of uselessness.

16. Shyam Saran writes about Marco Rubio's speech at the Munich Security Conference, describing it as an "unabashed white, racist manifesto". 

His remarks celebrated the history of conquest, exploitation, barbarity, and even ethnic cleansing, which has marked the history of Western imperialism and colonial empire-building across Asia, Africa, and Latin America. He wants this to be a source of pride and inspiration, not something to “atone for purported sins of past generations”. What is perplexing is that the history of the world after the Second World War, which is often described as an American era, is instead seen as a period of Western decline: 
“But in 1945, for the first time since the age of Columbus, it [i.e. the West] was contracting. The great western empires had entered into terminal decline accelerated by godless communist revolutions and by anti-colonial uprisings that would transform the world and drape the hammer and sickle across vast swaths of the map in the years to come.” Anti-colonial uprisings, which would include our own against British colonialism, are not celebrated as struggles for freedom and human dignity but as evidence of the abdication of the Western will to rule. Strange that this should come from a representative of a country that is celebrating 250 years of its own successful war of independence against British colonialism.

17. AI is leading to changes in software industry business models, resulting in less predictability and more uncertainty.

Software companies have, for decades, sold their wares on a “per seat” basis, where an employee gets unlimited use of a package of tools. Think of the traditional Microsoft 365 licence... In a world of AI “agents” carrying out duties autonomously, that model makes less sense. The unit of account will no longer be users but tasks completed, queries undertaken, and data “tokens” used. Sticky, predictable, year-round software-as-a-service revenue — the kind of thing that private equity firms love because it makes companies easier to load up with debt — may become an endangered species. Some are already embracing the post-seat era. Snowflake, a data management software maker, charges based on consumption, as does Databricks, an unlisted hotshot valued at $134bn, according to Crunchbase. ServiceNow is one of many working on hybrid models, where monthly fees meet pay-as-you-use add-ons... consumption-based pricing... Software companies’ predictability was an asset that contributed to high valuations.

Europe has more than 44 mobile operators that each have more than 500,000 subscribers compared with eight in the US and just four in China, according to industry group Connect Europe’s State of Digital Communications 2026 report.

19. China high-speed railway facts.

China’s railways have in recent days been ferrying about 20mn passengers a day, with half a billion train trips expected over the 40-day lunar new year period... Nearly three-quarters of passengers will travel at speeds of greater than 200kph, streaking across the country in the white and silver high-speed trains that have become a defining symbol of China’s industrial might. In December, China reached 50,000km of high-speed rail, enough track to circle the globe, compared with 8,500km in the whole of the EU as of 2023. Just over two decades after it was launched, the network now links 97 per cent of cities with populations of more than half a million... China opened its first high-speed passenger line in 2003 between Qinhuangdao and Shenyang in the north-east, with speeds of 200kph. The World Bank estimated in 2019 that China spent about $17mn to $21mn per kilometre on high-speed rail... Another 20,000km of track is planned by 2035... 

China has benefited from a combination of relatively cheap land, enormous scale, standardised designs and a permissive regulatory environment, experts say. The country’s rail project is now overseen by China State Railway Group, a huge state-owned enterprise that operates the network and helps fund new line development. The group plans to invest Rmb520bn ($75bn) this year... The group’s total liabilities have mounted to Rmb6.4tn. China State Railway reported a modest profit of Rmb11.7bn in the first three quarters of 2025, following several years of losses during the Covid-19 pandemic. Analysts said profits from the freight network helped offset losses from passenger high-speed rail. Local governments typically share the burden of building and operating the tracks. But many are struggling with their own shaky finances following the pandemic and the collapse of the property market.
