In the Indian context:
What about the uncool fa...G,
In the Indian context:
What about the uncool factor associated with going to work in a cycle? Though it is increasingly becoming cool , there is a long way to go?
The cycle culture was popular in China much earlier. We are never surprised by seeing images of a Chinese street full of cyclists.

Adoption of cycle as a means of transport is not easy. Agreeing with the rest of the points you mentioned.

-NikhilNikhil Narayananhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01925886537201353625noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5043138489010794057.post-17518303777516192512010-07-12T16:38:36.180+05:302010-07-12T16:38:36.180+05:30Sir,
The success of any program depends on the mut...Sir,
The success of any program depends on the mutual co-operation of two things.
1. The friendly way in which it is presented. (Exclusive bicycle lanes, free parking, even perhaps limited time discount vouchers!)
2. The way in which it is patronized.

The absence of a cohesive effort of both destroys a system.

I live in Montreal which is a bicycle friendly city. I also lived inPune which 30 years ago was a bicycle city. The temperatures in Pune may have changed aa degree or two more only due to the excessive cars that ply in the city.

Why have a free program regulated by ID cards etc? Why is the government interested in the business? Rather, the government should seriously target infrastructure (provide bicycle lanes, extensive bicycle parking). The bike rent program should not be free.

Second, the government must encourage small target audiences and go at it in phases. First schools and school children. Then housewives. Then daytime service providers (housemaids).

Government should put in a mechanism ensure corporate workplaces are bicycle friendly.

The sheer number of commuters will help drive the program successfully.

After reading your blog, I am not convinced that such a program won't work in India.
Regards,
MukundMukund Iyer R.https://www.blogger.com/profile/15808886369245018642noreply@blogger.com
